Mr. Ajay Kohli, Founding Partner of Kohli & Sobti Advocates, is a seasoned litigator with over three decades of experience at the Bar, with a practice built around civil and commercial litigation, dispute resolution and strategic courtroom advocacy.

Over the course of his extensive career, he has appeared in a wide spectrum of complex and high-stakes disputes, with particular experience in property and real estate disputes, wills and testamentary matters, succession and inheritance, eviction and landlord-tenant disputes, title and possession disputes, consumer disputes, contractual and commercial claims, arbitration and related court proceedings. He has also undertaken legal due diligence and advisory assignments for prominent corporate and institutional clients across India.

A significant part of his practice has involved his engagement as arguing counsel in complex and substantial matters, where the ability to identify the decisive issue, distil an extensive factual and legal record and place the case before the Court with precision is critical. His courtroom advocacy is marked by clarity, accuracy and a sharp command over the factual and legal contours of a matter.

With decades of courtroom experience, he has developed an instinct for identifying the real controversy behind a dispute often cutting through voluminous pleadings and peripheral issues to bring the Court’s attention to the questions that are truly determinative of the matter. His approach to advocacy combines detailed preparation with the ability to respond effectively to the Court’s questions and adapt arguments as the hearing progresses.

He has appeared extensively before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the Hon’ble Delhi High Court, in addition to various courts, tribunals and judicial fora across the country. He has been engaged in several significant and reported matters, both as a lead counsel and as arguing counsel, representing clients in disputes involving intricate questions of law, substantial commercial interests and complex factual matrices.

His experience extends beyond advocacy. He has himself acted as an Arbitrator in several disputes, bringing to the arbitral process the perspective of a practitioner who has spent decades appearing in complex civil and commercial matters. Mr. Kohli is also actively involved in the drafting and conveyancing of a wide range of civil and commercial instruments, including complex contracts, transactional documents, lease agreements, settlement deeds etc., with particular attention to their legal and practical implications.

He remains closely involved in the preparation and strategy of matters, including the examination of pleadings, documents, contractual provisions and the factual record. He has represented clients in several notable reported matters to his credit.

Mr. Kohli is an alumnus of Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, New Delhi, and graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.

With over 30 years at the Bar, Mr. Kohli continues to lead the firm’s litigation and dispute-resolution practice. He is actively involved in mentoring the firm’s lawyers, reviewing complex matters and shaping litigation strategy.
